The Bath Boat

The Bath Boat

RSA STUDENT DESIGN AWARDS 2016 'SUSTAINABLY CLEAN' BRIEF: Design a product or system that allows people to wash and clean themselves using less water and/or lower water temperatures.

Everyone has fun memories of bath-time when they were infants but few people consider the implications for the water supply. Most parents run their children a half-full bathtub of about 70-75 litres when a much smaller volume of water is needed for cleanliness. Children only take two thirds of the bath water run for them, wasting about 25 litres each bath! With NHS recommendations to bathe your child everyday, the UK could be wasting as much as 200 million litres a day. With this waste of an essential resource in mind I have designed the ‘Bath Boat’ to reduce the water used during children’s bath-times.

The ‘Bath Boat’ creates an awareness of water usage in the very young and bath-times using this product will instil respect for the environment in the next generation. As children grow, important conservation habits learnt from such a young age will stand them, and finite water resources, in good stead. The ‘Bath Boat’ will also serve as a reminder to parents that children will inherit the water shortages and other environmental problems which they create.
