The Dyslexie Utensils

The 'Dyspraxie' Utensils

Dyslexia and Dyspraxia affect one in ten people worldwide. Those with these conditions are tired of products that don’t work for them or stigmatise them. The ‘Dyspraxie’ and ‘Dyslexie’ cooking tools have been designed to give them confidence in the kitchen in an attractive, inclusive and desirable way. They aim to solve three of the key issues associated with the conditions: spilling, gripping and organisation.

The ‘Dyspraxie Utensils’ are informed by workshops with the Tyne and Wear Dyspraxia Association. Conventional wooden utensils have been subtly and attractively transformed to tackle the grip problems associated with Dyspraxia.

The 'Dyspraxie' Utensils were developed after extensive research with materials and the end users. Working with the Dyspraxia Tyne and Wear Association I pinpointed the difficulties experienced in common kitchen utensils. People with Dyspraxia often struggle with repetitive movement and grasp, making stirring a struggle. I held a workshop with the Dyspraxia Tyne and Wear Association, asking each person to create the best handle for them out of modelling clay. This really informed the final forms I produced .

The 'Dyspraxie' utensils have been developed to appear like a contemporary wooden implement. However the added weight and form increases muscle memory and stability for its primary users.
